CAGED is the system that is derived from the unique tuning of the guitar.

The primary major chord patterns found on the guitar are C, A, G, E, and D. They are the only major chords that can be played in the open position. Any other major chord that you form will be transposed from one of the CAGED patterns (usually carrying the pattern up the neck).

 They are just the beginning of the CAGED system. These 5 basic patterns open up a door to total fretboard domination. Every other chord, scale, and arpeggio can be built from these 5 patterns. It has been rumored that Jimi Hendrix's vast abilities stem from his knowledge of the CAGED system and look at what it did for him.
