The major scale is the primary scale in music. When we build chords or arpeggios we use the major scale as a starting point.

Many "complicated" things such as modes are only variations of the major scale.

The major is scale is a diatonic scale. It's also called the Ionian scale. It is made up of 7 different notes.
The formula for the major scale is as follows:
whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, whole step, half step
On the guitar a whole step would consist of 2 frets and a half step would be only one fret.
